Business Enterprise Week

Two Filton College business classes that joined together to raise money for Business Enterprise week have seen their hard work pay off.

The Introductory and First Diploma Business students undertook a range of activities during Business Enterprise week back in November to raise money for charity. The group voted for the charities they felt were most deserving and closest to their hearts. The majority vote went to Cancer Research and Children in Need.

Over £300 was raised from various activities including;

Top Banana Challenge
Five teams competed in the Top Banana challenge, which was to create an entrepreneurial idea inspired by the seven Olympic and Paralympic values. Various ideas were submitted including “Mini Funfairs”, “Olympic Theme Music CD”, “Support for Carers’’, ‘’Culture Club’’ and ‘’Olympic Hoodies’’, the latter being the winner which was entered for consideration for the National Final in December.

Social Enterprise
Included presentation on Social Enterprises, which prompted discussions on how some businesses operate to fulfil a social purpose rather than to make a profit.

Business Enterprise
The students marketed, produced and sold “Celebration Cakes” which was their enterprising idea to raise money for their two chosen charities. The students were split into five teams of business areas including; finance, marketing, sales, promotion and management.

The students learnt a huge amount from this first attempt at running a Business Enterprise, identifying what went well and what possible improvements could be implemented in any future projects.

Reece Thomson is currently undertaking the Introductory Diploma, he commented: ‘I enjoyed Business Enterprise Week; it showed us what working in a team can achieve and how different departments in business come together for the same goal. It was good to put into practice all we have learnt.’

Katie Searle is undertaking the First Diploma, she said: ‘It was not only a good experience but was fun at the same time. It just shows how hard you can work in a short amount of time.’

Katie Green from Children in Need commented: ' It is fantastic that the Business students from Filton College 'did something different' to raise a great amount for BBC Children in Need to help disadvantaged young people in the UK.  I have visited projects so I know how much difference this will make- thank you!'

Both courses have been consistently above the national benchmark for achievement with pass rates of between 90% and 100% for the last five years.
